Highlights from Our Recent Women Entrepreneurs Meeting in Monroe County
Last night, the Women Entrepreneurs in Monroe County and Surrounding Area gathered for one of our regular meetings, a space dedicated to encouragement, inspiration, and fellowship. This time, we had the privilege of hearing from Megan Bernett, a financial planner, small business mom, and advocate for women’s financial empowerment. Her presentation, “Money & Mindset for Women Business Owners,” offered practical advice and a fresh perspective on building financial confidence.
Let’s get into it.
Money Is a Tool: Shaping Your Mindset
Megan began by reminding us that money is a tool and how we feel about it matters. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their relationship with money, emphasizing that shifting from a mindset of scarcity to one of intention can transform our personal finances. Her hope is that every woman can live life confidently, making intentional decisions that support her goals.
The Psychology of Money
A healthy mindset is essential when it comes to money. Megan discussed the importance of understanding our beliefs and emotions around finances, as these shape the choices we make as business owners. She encouraged us to cultivate a positive outlook and see money as a resource for growth and opportunity.
Treat Your Business Like a Business
Megan stressed the importance of drawing a hard line between personal and business finances. Treating your business professionally means keeping accounts separate and ensuring that your financial decisions are guided by clear, business-focused strategies.
Your Team of Experts
No one scales a business alone. Megan highlighted the value of assembling a team of professionals, including a financial planner (like herself), CPA, bookkeeper, and estate attorney. She explained that surrounding yourself with experts helps you navigate complex decisions and supports your business growth. These meetings are a great opportunity to network and connect in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere.
Priority #1: Build an Emergency Fund
Business income may fluctuate, but your life shouldn’t. Megan emphasized the need for an emergency fund, recommending that entrepreneurs set aside 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. This financial cushion provides stability and peace of mind, even during uncertain times.
Priority #2: Protect Your Income First
Your income is your biggest asset. Megan discussed the importance of protecting your income, as well as safeguarding your business and family. Investing in insurance and risk management ensures that you’re prepared for unexpected challenges.
Priority #3: Investing Basics & Compound Interest
While Megan didn’t delve too deeply into investment strategies, she encouraged women to diversify their investments. She highlighted the power of compound interest, explaining that the earlier you start investing, the more time your money has to grow making a significant impact over the long term.
Business Structure Matters
Choosing the right business structure affects how you’re paid, taxed, and how your personal assets are protected. Megan cautioned against using tax deductions as an excuse for unnecessary spending. With thoughtful planning, you could even position yourself to become your own bank.
You Are Not Alone: No Barrier to Entry
Megan’s “No Barrier to Entry” philosophy ensures that every woman who wants to become financially healthy has access to support and guidance. She’s dedicated to helping you prioritize your goals, keep you accountable, and talk through financial decisions. Her message is clear: “Nothing bad happens when women have more wealth.”
