Logos and Rhema: When God’s Word Speaks to You Personally

Have you ever opened your Bible and felt like a verse was written just to you?

That is the difference between Logos and Rhema.

I had heard these terms on and off throughout the years but never took a moment to investigate what they meant. In the original Greek, the Bible uses two main words to describe the “word”: Logos and Rhema.

They are both powerful but work in different ways in the life of a believer.

Let’s get into it.

What is Logos?

Logos refers to the written or spoken Word of God. It is the message of Scripture in its entirety. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This is Jesus Himself, the living Logos, the full expression of God’s thoughts, plans, and promises.

When you open your Bible and read a passage in its context, learning about God’s character, laws, and salvation plan, you are engaging with the Logos.

It is foundational, unchanging, and eternal. Think of it as the bedrock truth of God’s Word available to all of us.

What is Rhema?

Rhema is when the Holy Spirit takes a Logos word and speaks it directly into your heart for a specific moment or situation. It is when the written word becomes a living word, tailored and applied by the Spirit to guide, correct, encourage, or reveal.

Ephesians 6:17 refers to the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word (Rhema) of God.” That is not just any Bible verse but a specific word, revealed and active, often in spiritual battle.

Matthew 4:4 also says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (Rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Rhema is fresh bread for your spirit.

God will take a general truth and make it a personal commission

God uses His eternal truth to speak to your personal walk. Many believers can relate.

You might be reading your Bible, and suddenly a verse jumps off the page. Tears come to your eyes, conviction stirs in your chest, or peace floods your mind.

That is the Holy Spirit breathing life onto the Logos to give you a Rhema.

Rhema in a Christian’s Life

God loves to speak to His children personally. Have you ever:

Read a verse and instantly knew what to do?

Heard a sermon and felt like it was just for you?

Opened your Bible and found the exact answer to your prayer?

That is Rhema.

Rhema does not replace the Logos, the written Word. It flows from it. The Holy Spirit never contradicts Scripture, but He often applies it in a timely, precise way that leads you forward.

How to Receive a Rhema Word

Information without application is useless in my opinion. Here are a few things to apply to your daily life:

1. Spend time in the Logos. Read Scripture regularly. Rhema often comes when you are already rooted in God’s Word.
2. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak. Invite God into your reading and prayer time.
3. Listen with a soft heart. Rhema can be gentle or sharp, but it is always from a loving Father.
4. Test what you hear. A Rhema word will always line up with the character and truth of God.

Final Thoughts

God is not silent. His Word is alive, and He wants to lead you daily.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active…”and that word includes Logos and Rhema.

You have the foundation and the fire. You have the written Word and the whispered guidance.

You are not alone in decision-making or direction-seeking. God is still speaking.

The beauty of God’s Word is that it is both timeless and personal.

The Logos—His written Word—is our unshakable foundation. The Rhema—when the Holy Spirit breathes specific life and direction into that Word—is what moves us into action. We need both.

Without the Logos, our faith has no anchor.

Without the Rhema, our faith has no motion.

If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus, the One who is the living Word (John 1:1), today is your day. He loves you, died for you, and rose again so you could be forgiven and restored. He is knocking at the door of your heart right now, waiting for you to open it. If you wish to open the door of your heart and life now to Him, you can invite Him in NOW.

Pray this prayer of Salvation wherever you are:

Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again so I could have eternal life. I confess that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. Today, I open the door of my heart and invite You in as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Spirit, guide me by Your Word, and help me to live for You all the days of my life. Thank You for saving me. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer today, welcome to the family of God! Begin reading the Bible daily, listening for both His Logos and Rhema, and surround yourself with believers who will help you grow.

Reach out if you have questions or need support in your new walk of life. I would love to chat and be a trusted source of God’s truth.

Until next time, my friend.
