Homemade Chocolate Milk that is rich and creamy.
If your house is anything like mine, a gallon of Kwik Trip chocolate milk barely makes it through the day. The kids love it, and honestly, I do too. But when that familiar jug in the fridge runs dry, there is no need to make a special trip into town. With just a few pantry staples, you can whip up rich, creamy homemade chocolate milk that tastes just as good, dare I say even better.
Let’s get into it.
Homemade Chocolate Milk with Cocoa Powder
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk (whole milk makes it extra creamy, but use whatever you have)
- 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2–3 Tbsp sugar (or honey, maple syrup, etc.)
- Pinch of salt (optional, but brings out the chocolate flavor)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (this is the secret weapon!)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, stir together the cocoa powder, sugar, and pinch of salt.
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of warm water or warm milk and whisk until smooth. This step keeps the cocoa from clumping.
- Pour in the rest of your cold milk and stir well.
- Stir in the vanilla extract. It gives the milk the added kick needed to bring everything together.
That is it! No syrups, no mystery ingredients. Just real chocolate milk you can make in minutes.
Why Vanilla is a Must
I tried this recipe without vanilla and then with it, and the difference was night and day. Vanilla actually deepens the chocolate flavor and ties everything together. The kids agreed: vanilla is a must.
So next time the Kwik Trip chocolate milk runs out, do not panic. Just pull out the cocoa powder and make your own batch right at home.
Until next time, my friend.
