The Transformative Power of Identity in Jesus Christ

Our identity shapes our choices, our relationships,
and how we see ourselves in the world.

If you read my earlier post of Why People Resist the Supernatural and Ultimately Their Spiritual Authority, you may remember how I noted the number one reason for this resistance is their lack of identity in Jesus Christ. I wanted to take a deeper dive and chronicled my notes below.

Each point will be dripping with Scripture to back up each claim. Learn what is allotted you as it will change your life.

Let’s get into it.

WHY KNOWING YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST IS CRUCIAL

A. Because identity directs behavior.

You live out who you believe you are.

  • Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) – “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”

If you believe you’re weak, you’ll act weak.
If you believe you’re chosen, you’ll act chosen.

B. Because the enemy attacks identity FIRST.

He did it with:

  • Eve (“Did God really say?” – Genesis 3:1)
  • Jesus (“If You are the Son of God…” – Matthew 4:3 AMP)

Satan assaults identity because if you don’t know who you are, you won’t walk in your authority.

C. Because identity brings stability.

  • Isaiah 33:6 (NLT) – “He will be the sure foundation for your times.”
  • Colossians 2:10 (AMP) – “You are in Him, made full and complete…”

When you know who you are, fear loses power.

D. Because identity produces confidence in prayer.

  • Hebrews 4:16 (NLT) – “Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.”
  • 1 John 5:14-15 (NLT) – Confidence comes from knowing we belong to Him.

E. Because identity shapes destiny.

  • Ephesians 1:11 (NLT) – “Because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God…”
  • Philippians 1:6 (NLT) – “He… will continue His work until it is finished.”

WHAT IDENTITY IN CHRIST ACTUALLY IS (THEOLOGICALLY)

Identity in Christ means three things happen at salvation:

A. You are POSITIONALLY placed “in Christ.”

This is a legal, spiritual, unchanging reality.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:30 (AMP) – “But it is from Him that you have your life in Christ Jesus…”
  • Ephesians 1:13 (NLT) – “When you believed in Christ, He identified you as His own…”
  • Romans 8:1 (AMP) – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation—no guilty verdict—for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Being “in Christ” means God sees you through Christ’s righteousness, not your past.

B. You are UNITED with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

  • Romans 6:3-5 (NLT) – “We were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism… we also will be raised to life as He was.”
  • Colossians 2:12 (AMP) – “…you were buried with Him… and raised with Him…”

This means you no longer live from the old nature’s identity.

C. You receive a NEW nature and NEW status.

  • 2 Peter 1:4 (AMP) – “You may escape… the corruption… and become sharers of the divine nature.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (AMP) – “If any person is in Christ… the old previous moral and spiritual condition has passed away.”

Your identity is now rooted in His life, not your own.

WHAT CHANGES WHEN YOU COME TO CHRIST

A. You become a child of God. Not metaphorically but literally adopted.

  • John 1:12 (NLT) – “But to all who believed Him… He gave the right to become children of God.”
  • Romans 8:15-16 (AMP) – “You have received the Spirit of adoption… The Spirit Himself testifies… that we are children of God.”
  • Galatians 4:6-7 (NLT) – “Since you are His child, God has made you His heir.”

Your Father defines you now, not your past, trauma, sins, or people.

B. You are declared righteous (justified).

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 (AMP) – “We might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
  • Romans 5:1 (NLT) – “We have been made right in God’s sight by faith.”

This is a legal status given by God.

C. You are made holy (sanctified positionally).

  • Hebrews 10:10 (NLT) – “God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.”
  • 1 Corinthians 6:11 (AMP) – “…you were washed… sanctified… justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Your identity contains holiness because God has set you apart.

D. You are made alive spiritually.

  • Ephesians 2:4-6 (NLT) – “He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead… For He raised us from the dead along with Christ.”
  • Colossians 3:1-3 (AMP) – “You were raised with Christ… your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”

You are spiritually alive and able to hear, discern, and walk with God.

WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE IN CHRIST

A. You are loved deeply and permanently.

  • Jeremiah 31:3 (NLT) – “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”
  • Romans 8:38-39 (NLT) – Nothing can separate you from God’s love.
  • 1 John 3:1 (AMP) – “See what an incredible quality of love the Father has given us… that we should be called children of God!”

B. You are God’s masterpiece, His workmanship.

  • Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) – “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus…”

C. You are chosen. Wanted. Hand-picked.

  • Ephesians 1:4 (AMP) – “He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world…”
  • 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT) – “You are a chosen people… God’s very own possession.”

This means your identity is rooted in being wanted, not tolerated.

D. You are forgiven fully, completely, irrevocably.

  • Colossians 1:13-14 (AMP) – “In whom we have redemption… the forgiveness of sins.”
  • Psalm 103:12 (NLT) – “He has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west.”

As far as the east is from the west. You can travel north and eventually you will hit the top and start to move south. But no matter how far east you go, you will never catch the west.

E. The old you is not the true you anymore.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (AMP) – “The old… has passed away.”

That means your identity is not:

  • your past
  • your mistakes
  • your trauma
  • your family history
  • your weaknesses

Your identity is who God says you are now, not who you were then.

F. You are seated with Christ in heavenly places.

  • Ephesians 2:6 (AMP) – “He raised us up… and made us sit down together… in the heavenly sphere.”

This is KINGDOM placement with identity and authority. When the Bible talks about “kingdom placement with identity and authority”, it is referring to the spiritual reality that when you are in Christ, you are positioned in God’s Kingdom with both a secure identity and delegated authority.

Colossians 3:1 (NLT) – “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits at God’s right hand.”

Your focus and perspective now align with God’s Kingdom, not just the world.

G. You are an heir of God.

  • Romans 8:17 (NLT) – “Since we are His children, we are His heirs.”
  • Galatians 3:29 (AMP) – “…then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs…”

Everything Christ purchased belongs to you spiritually.

THE AUTHORITY YOU HOLD BECAUSE OF YOUR IDENTITY

Many Christians struggle because they don’t know the authority tied to identity.

A. You have authority over sin.

  • Romans 6:6-7 (NLT) – “We are no longer slaves to sin.”
  • Romans 6:14 (AMP) – “Sin shall not have dominion over you.”

Your identity is someone who is FREE.

B. You have authority over the enemy.

  • Luke 10:19 (AMP) – “I have given you authority… over all the power the enemy possesses.”
  • James 4:7 (NLT) – “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
  • 1 John 4:4 (AMP) – “He who lives in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

Identity gives confidence in spiritual warfare.

C. You have the Spirit of God living in you.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT) – “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.”
  • Romans 8:11 (AMP) – “The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you…”

This makes you spiritually equipped and empowered.

“Lord Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe that You died for my sins and rose again, and I accept You as my Lord and Savior. I invite You into my life and my heart today. Thank You for forgiving me, loving me, and giving me a new identity as Your child. Help me to follow You all the days of my life. Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer sincerely, welcome to God’s family! You are now a beloved child of God, forgiven, redeemed, and filled with His Spirit. Reach out if you have questions or need assistance in your new walk.
