The Seven Trumpets of Revelation – Warning, Judgment, and Hope

Discerning God’s Voice in the Midst of Judgment

“Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth…” — Revelation 8:13

While taking a break in the middle of my busy day, I opened the Word and found myself in Revelation 8. It’s the beginning of the trumpet judgments—a powerful section of Scripture that speaks to God’s justice, His warnings, and His mercy, all at once.

As I read about the eagle crying out with a loud voice—“Woe to those who dwell on the earth!”—I knew I had to dig deeper and reflect on what this means, not only in the context of end-times prophecy but also in my own daily walk with the Lord.

Let’s get into it.

The Seven Trumpets

What Are They?

The trumpet judgments follow the breaking of the seven seals (Revelation 6–8). Trumpets in Scripture symbolize divine announcements, often warnings or the call to battle. These seven trumpets are escalating judgments released on the earth during a future time known as the Great Tribulation, after the church has been removed and God’s wrath is poured out.

They are not random disasters—they are measured judgments with redemptive purpose: to lead people to repentance before it’s too late.

The Eagle’s Cry

Then I looked, and I heard a solitary eagle flying in [a]midheaven [for all to see], saying with a loud voice, “[b]Woe, woe, woe [great wrath is coming] to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpets which the three angels are about to sound [announcing ever greater judgments]!”

Revelation 8:13 AMP

This eagle (some manuscripts say angel) interrupts the narrative after the fourth trumpet to warn of the increasing severity of what’s coming next. The triple “woe” signals that the final three trumpets will not just affect the physical world—they will strike at the very soul of humanity.

Overview of the Seven Trumpets

Here’s a simplified breakdown of each trumpet, its significance, and even appication to your life today:

Trumpet 1-God’s control over nature and His provision.

The first [angel] sounded [his trumpet], and there was [a storm of] hail and fire, mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

Revelation 8:7 AMP

Hail and fire are mixed with blood and thrown to the earth, destroying a third of it.

Don’t anchor your life in the temporary comforts of the world. Life is but a vapor and the world around us is passing away. Layup true treasures where neither moth nor thief can infiltrate.

God is your source of wealth, and it is He who gives you the ability to gain wealth. Trust the Provider, not the provision. He is your source, not your job.

Trumpet 2 –Economic collapse; disruption of what nations trust for power.

The second angel sounded [his trumpet], and something like a great mountain blazing with fire was hurled into the sea; and a third of the sea was turned to blood; and a third of the living creatures that were in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Revelation 8:8-9 AMP

A blazing mountain is thrown into the sea and a third of the oceans are polluted, causing destruction to sea life and trade alike.

Your security isn’t in money or systems—it’s in God alone.

Trumpet 3 – Corruption of truth or poisoned teaching; spiritual confusion.

The third angel sounded [his trumpet], and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch [flashing across the sky], and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of [fresh] waters. 11 The name of the star is [a]Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the waters, because they had become bitter (toxic).

Revelation 8:10-11 AMP

A star called Wormwood falls and hits the water and a third of all fresh water becomes deadly.

How could this possibly have an application to my everyday life you ask? Filter everything through the truth of God’s Word. Bitter water can look clean.

Trumpet 4 – Spiritual darkness and loss of direction.

Then the fourth angel sounded [his trumpet], and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and a third of the daylight would not shine, and the night in the same way [would not shine].

Revelation 8:12 AMP

The heavens are darkened. The sun, moon, and stars lose a third of their light.

Jesus is the Light of the World—walk in Him, not in confusion. In Christ, you find your true identity.

At this point, the eagle cries:

“Woe, woe, woe…”

The next trumpets strike deeper—into the spiritual and moral fabric of the earth.

Trumpet 5 – Demonic torment; mental and spiritual affliction.

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

Revelation 9:1-12 AMP

With the First Woe comes demonic locusts. They afflict people for five months. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

There is no peace apart from Christ. If you’re battling torment, seek His covering and deliverance. There is deliverance from anything that oppresses you.

Trumpet 6 – Massive death and war, yet people still refuse to repent.

The Sixth Trumpet—Army from the East

13 Then the sixth angel sounded [his trumpet], and I heard a solitary voice from the four horns of the golden altar which stands before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the [appointed] hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of the troops of cavalry was twice ten thousand times ten thousand (two hundred million); I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw the horses and their riders in my vision: the riders had breastplates [the color] of fire and of hyacinth (sapphire blue) and of brimstone (yellow); and the heads of the horses looked like the heads of lions; and from out of their mouths came fire and smoke and brimstone (burning sulfur). 18 A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone that came from the mouths of the horses. 19 For the power of the horses [to do harm] is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and it is with them that they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, [a]did not repent even then of the works of their hands, so as to cease worshiping and paying homage to the demons and the idols of gold and of silver and of bronze and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they did not repent of their murders nor of their sorceries (drugs, intoxications) nor of their [sexual] immorality nor of their thefts.

Revelation 9:13-21 AMP

During this time, four angels are released along with an army that kills one-third of humanity.

God’s mercy is extended—even in judgment. Don’t harden your heart when He calls you to turn.

Trumpet 7 – Final judgment and reward; God’s reign begins.

Then the seventh angel sounded [his trumpet]; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,

“The kingdom (dominion, rule) of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell face downward and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“To You we give thanks, O Lord God Almighty [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all], Who are and Who were, because You have taken Your great power and the sovereignty [which is rightly Yours] and have [now] begun to reign. 18 And the nations (Gentiles) became enraged, and Your wrath and indignation came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and [the time came] to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints (God’s people) and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and [the time came] to destroy the destroyers of the earth.”

19 And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning, loud rumblings and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

Revelation 11:15-19 AMP

Heaven declares, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord.”

For the believer, this trumpet signals victory! We already have the victory. We play from the point of victory.

Keep pressing on in faith.

When Will These Things Happen?

The trumpet judgments are part of what many scholars call the Great Tribulation, a future period of God’s judgment described in Revelation chapters 6–19. These events are not happening yet—but the world is increasingly primed for them. Jesus described this in Matthew 24 as “birth pains”—warning signs that precede the final labor.

We are not to predict exact dates, but we are called to watch, stay awake, and live ready (Matthew 25:13).

So What Do I Do With This Today?

Live with urgency – The eagle’s cry is a wake-up call. Eternity is real. Share the gospel while there’s time.

Cling to Christ – He is the Light in a dark world. Anchor your life in Him—not in comfort, money, or systems.

Stay grounded in truth – Don’t let spiritual “wormwood” poison your heart. Get in the Word daily.

Be encouraged – If you belong to Christ, the trumpet judgments are not for your destruction. God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through Jesus (1 Thess. 5:9).

3 [a]Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and who keep the things which are written in it [heeding them and taking them to heart]; for the time [of fulfillment] is near.

Revelation 1:3 AMP

Let the warnings stir us—not to fear, but to faithful living, holy urgency, and deep hope.

Until next time, my friend.
