The Lord is My Banner: A Reflection on Isaiah 26:4 and Exodus 17:15
Today’s verse of the day found on the Bible app is Isaiah 26:4 AMP:
Trust [confidently] in the LORD forever [He is your fortress, your shield, your banner], For the LORD GOD is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].
It tied in beautifully with my daily Bible reading this morning. I am in Exodus and finished up the plagues of Egypt and came to the part in Exodus 17:15 that says:
And Moses built an altar and named it The Lord Is My Banner (Jehovah Nissi);
Let’s get into it.
What is a banner?
In ancient times, a banner was raised high in battle so that soldiers could rally together, stay united, and know where their strength and direction came from.
When we hear the Lord our Banner, it reminds us that God Himself is lifted high above our lives. He is our identity, our strength, our protection, and the One who secures our victory.
We do not fight in our own power
Instead, we gather under Him and trust that He is the everlasting Rock who brings peace, justice, and deliverance.
A Source of Perfect Peace
Isaiah 26 also speaks of perfect peace for those who keep their minds steadfast on the Lord. Peace and victory are possible only when our trust is in God alone. The Lord as our Banner is both a symbol of His presence over us and a promise that He will fight for us.
He Protects His Own
In my reading of Exodus the last few days, it was amazing to note the distinction God gave between the people of Israel and the people of Egypt. While the plagues ravished Egypt in every way possible, those who lived in Goshen were not affected. God is no respecter of persons, so what He does for one He will do for all.
There is nothing that God cannot turn around in your life.
Sickness?
“If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon you which I have brought upon the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
Exodus 15:26 AMP
Every promise in the Bible is for you, and that includes this one. He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord Who Heals.
Lack?
“The Israelites did according to the word of Moses; they asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, gold, and clothing. And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested; and they plundered the Egyptians.”
Exodus 12:35–36 AMP
After Egypt was hit with the Ten Plagues, God gave the Israelites favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, who gave them silver, gold, and clothing. The Hebrews obtained their freedom from their burdens and left Egypt behind loaded.
The word “Lord” in this verse is the personal, covenant name of God revealed to Moses, emphasizing God’s eternal, self-existent, and faithful nature. Whenever you see “Lord” in all caps in most English translations, it is typically representing YHWH, distinguishing it from the general title Adonai, which means “Lord” or “Master.”
In Him, we find direction, unity, and hope.
If you have never made the decision to place your trust in Jesus Christ, today is the perfect time. He died on the cross for your sins, rose again in victory, and offers you forgiveness, peace, and eternal life.
Call to Salvation
If you would like to partake in this peace that surpasses all understanding, pray this prayer wherever you are:
Heavenly Father, I come before You recognizing that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again to give me eternal life. Today I turn away from my old ways and place my trust in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Cover me with His blood, cleanse me, and make me new. Thank You for receiving me into Your family and giving me the gift of eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lift your eyes today to the Lord your Banner
If you prayed that prayer, congratulations and welcome to the family of God! Your sins are all forgiven and there is no need for shame or condemnation. Your sins are cast in the Sea of Forgetfulness, never to be remembered.
He is your peace, your strength, and your victory.
God created the world is six days. He does not need more than one day to turn your situation around.
Until next time, my friend.
