Pursuing God’s Presence Like Obed-Edom

The story of Obed-Edom reminds us that one encounter with the presence of God can change everything.

This past Sunday, Pastor Jonathan Shuttlesworth preached on the story of Obed-Edom, a man whose life was transformed by the presence of God. His message reminded me that the greatest blessing in life does not come from things, but from the nearness of God Himself.

Let’s get into this.

The Story of Obed-Edom

In 2 Samuel 6, the Ark of the Covenant, which represented the presence of God, was brought to the house of Obed-Edom after Uzzah touched the Ark and died. Scripture says, “The Ark of the Lord remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household” (2 Samuel 6:11).

For those three months, everything in his home began to flourish. The presence of God brought a supernatural blessing that could not be denied. It was evident that the hand of the Lord was upon him.

Following the Presence

What is most powerful about Obed-Edom’s story is what happened next. When David decided to move the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, Obed-Edom did not stay behind. He knew that the source of his blessing was not the house itself, but the presence that filled it.

In 1 Chronicles 15:18, 21, and 24, Obed-Edom is listed among the gatekeepers and musicians who served before the Ark. Later, in 1 Chronicles 26, we learn that his sons also became gatekeepers in the house of the Lord. This shows that his devotion to God’s presence became a legacy that touched his entire family.

Obed-Edom experienced the blessing of hosting the presence of God, and it changed his priorities forever. He followed the Ark, not out of duty, but out of a deep understanding that life is only fruitful when it remains close to God.

The Realization of Obed-Edom

Obed-Edom realized something that many people never do:

The blessing is not in the possessions or the outward success. The true blessing is in the presence of God.

When the Ark moved, Obed-Edom moved. He did not want to live one day outside of the presence that had transformed his household. His faithfulness reveals a powerful truth that those who value the presence of God above all else will always live in the overflow of His favor.

A Call for Us Today

This message challenges us to ask ourselves an important question:
Are we chasing the blessing, or are we following the presence?

It is easy to enjoy the goodness of God for a season and then drift away when life feels comfortable. But like Obed-Edom, we must learn to pursue God’s presence wherever it leads. When we make His presence our priority, everything else falls into place.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that Your presence is the greatest treasure we could ever know. Help us to follow You wholeheartedly, just as Obed-Edom did. May our homes, our work, and our lives be filled with Your presence, and may we never take it for granted. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Call to Salvation

If you have never received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can begin a new life in His presence today. The greatest blessing you could ever receive is not material, but eternal: the salvation of your soul.

The Bible says, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Pray this from your heart:

Heavenly Father,
I come to You today knowing that I need You.
I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for my sins, and that You raised Him from the dead.
I ask You to forgive me, cleanse me, and make me new.
Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior.
From this day forward, I will follow You and live in Your presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, you have just begun the greatest journey of your life. Stay close to God, stay connected to His Word, and never stop following His presence just like Obed-Edom did.

Final Thoughts

The same God who blessed Obed-Edom desires to dwell in our lives today. His presence still brings peace to troubled hearts, order to chaos, and blessing to everything it touches.

The question is not whether God desires to bless us, but whether we are willing to make room for His presence. When we do, we will see that His favor is not seasonal but continual for those who walk with Him daily.

Until next time, my friend.
